BLACKFORD CONSIDERS PUBLIC SMOKING BAN
A suggested ordinance that would ban smoking in all or parts of
Blackford County is still up in the air.
Even though such an ordinance has yet to be written, the
possibility of one has stirred up controversy in the county. The
issue popped up in February when Serverino Sulit, a retired
surgeon and a member of the Blackford County Health Department's
board of directors, said the board had voted unanimously to ask
the Blackford County commissioners to pass an ordinance that
would protect the citizens of Blackford County from secondhand
tobacco smoke.
But the board has no legal authority to demand an ordinance, and
the commissioners are free to ignore the suggestion. But all
three commissioners on Friday said the issue would be dealt with
sometime in the future, but no one could or would say exactly
when.
