CLUB'S $16,250 SMOKING FINE MAY BE REDUCED
A $16,250 illegal-smoking fine certainly gets people's
attention.
The Allegheny County Health Department's fine March 22 against
the Lithuanian Citizens' Society of Western Pennsylvania served
as a stark warning to all social, fraternal and ethnic clubs
that failure to comply with the anti-smoking ordinance might
cause some of their money to go up in smoke.
"We wanted to get everyone's attention that they have to comply
with the law," said Dr. Bruce W. Dixon, county health director.
And it worked, he said.
But the Lithuanian club, whose officials attended an appeal
hearing yesterday at the health department, stands to get a
reduction in the fine -- if it faces any fine at all.
