COUNCIL VOTES TO BAN SMOKING
New Hope banned smoking in restaurants and bars, as borough
council Wednesday touted the health benefits to workers and
patrons, while scolding the Legislature for failing to enact
statewide prohibitions.
“It's time,” said Richard Hirschfield, the president of the
council and a former smoker. “It's past time.”
The ban makes New Hope the first community in the area to ban
smoking, following a lead Philadelphia set in January.
The ordinance contains exceptions for sidewalk cafes, outdoor
service areas and private clubs. It takes effect in 30 days,
under state law.
Feedback on the proposal ranged Wednesday from praise by the
Clean Air Council to criticism by the local cigar store.
