City Campaign Aims To Decrease Cigarette Litter
The public works campaign to “Keep Birmingham Beautiful” aims to decrease the amount of cigarette litter on the city’s streets.
On Thursday, they handed out portable ashtrays and placed permanent ashtrays along Fourth Avenue North.
They want to see if this will help reduce the amount of litter in the area.
“Phillip Morris has agreed to sponsor 1,000 of these portable ashtrays, so we aren’t trying to stop them from smoking. All we want them to know is cigarette butts are litter, too,” said Joyce Culpepper of the Public Works Department.
After a few weeks, the Public Works Department will follow up on the project and, if it’s working, it plans to extend the program to other parts of the city.
