HILTON HEAD ISLAND Though smoking bans will take effect in
Bluffton and unincorporated Beaufort County in January, there
doesn't seem to be much concern about the upcoming smoke-out.
Businesses appear to have accepted the ban and think it may even
increase customer traffic, while town and county officials see
compliance coming with few problems.
At Katie O'Donald's Irish Pub in Bluffton, manager Steve Tuck
estimates that now as many as 75 percent of the people in the
bar area smoke. That will soon change.
Although customers might not like giving up a cigarette with a
beer, they're not likely to leave, he said.
For one thing, with bans in the county and Bluffton and one
likely on the way on Hilton Head Island, there's nowhere else to
go.
