TOBACCO COMPANIES IGNITE AD DEBATE
Tobacco companies will try to argue their way back into the world
of advertising and promotions in the Supreme Court tomorrow in a
legal battle with the federal government.
The size of health warnings on cigarette packs, corporate
sponsorship of cultural and sporting events and specific
questions on the nature of advertising are at issue in the last
phase of a constitutional challenge launched 10 years ago by
three tobacco companies against the federal Tobacco Act.
The Quebec Court of Appeal ruled in 2005 some restrictions in
the federal law went too far, including an outright ban on
tobacco sponsorships.
